What we eat
Before you judge our diet, remember that we burn 4 to 6 thousand calories each day and, despite all we eat, we've lost about 30kgs between us.
Breakfast
Two cups of hot porridge each, flavoured with shredded coconut, granola, berries and powdered milk.
As we walk, we eat a protein bar and breakkie bar. Then, for morning tea, a high calorie cookie.
This gives us 1000 calories by 9 am.
Lunch
Lunch is wraps. We alternate between PB&J and Tuna or metwurst with cheese, avo and tomatoes. We'll usually have a few snacks to finish off.
Snacking
W
We snack during the arvo. A bag of kettle crisps, nuts (almonds, peanuts, cashews and pistachios), a chocolate bar each, some m&ms and dried fruit. When we can, we have biltong. We tried jerky for a bit, but it's such a poor substitute for the dried African meat.e snack during the arvo. Dinner
Dinner is a cup of chicken noodle soup and a dehydrated meal, suped up with a couple of 2 minute noodles (ramen) and a splash of olive oil.
Supper is hot chocolate and 3 or 4 cookies each.
Town Food
Back in high school, Paul and I took two lunch boxes each. We ate a loafs worth of sandwiches, a tub of yogurt, an apple, a breakfast bar and other snacks to get us through the day. After school we'd eat a pack of tim-tams, a big glass of milo, fight, then have dinner. Paul would finish the day with a litre of ice cream.... That's nothing on what one can put away when confronted with unlimited offerings in town on the PCT.
Breakfast in Town
A town breakkie for me will typically be a chicken fried steak (think breakfast schnitty), a couple of eggs, toast, a sausage on the side, a bowl of fruit and a short stack of pancakes. All washed down with 3 or 4 cups of coffee (American coffee is super weak). J eats lots of pancakes and waffles.
Dinner in Town
Eating in America used to scare the crap out of me. Their menus make no sense (example: entre means main meal. I still don't know what Americans mean by a la carte, it's different to us). The salads are giant bowls of lettuce hidden under generous lashings of creamy sauce and covered by layers of fake looking cheese. And, the servings are huge beyond belief, so much so that, in the past, J and I would share a starter for an entire meal....not any more.
...now we'll eat three courses and drink a bottle of wine without blinking, and get extras on the side. And to finish, I'll see Paul's litre of ice cream and raise him an American sized piece of key lime pie.
The other day we passed a McDonald's on trail. We took 3 hours off hiking to 'calorie up'. Two burgers, large fries, 10 nuggets, a large thickshake and two muffins (all for each of us) later, we hiked on.
Hiker hunger is real, man.
